We have these days unprecedented means of collecting data at several chemical, physical, biological levels and spatial scales. We have relatively cheap and accessible computer power to store this data. Currently, general sense suggests, at least, two main consequences of this massive data accumulation:
(1) It triggers an immense number of new possibilities to understand biological system ranging from individual level processes to ecosystem dynamics, and
(2) It creates new challenges to link mechanistic theories with empirically grounded hypothesis across scientific disciplines.
Our group discuss and try to solve some of the several fascinating questions that arise from such a challenge. For example, which kind of modeling should we develop to link individual level processes with ecosystem dynamics? Which kind of mechanisms should we test with such an amount of data? Can individual and population level processes (i.e., starting from neutral mechanisms) predict the macroecological patterns of radiations, biodiversity and biological networks?
To address these and other questions we use, develop and test ecological and evolutionary models using fossil, historical and contemporary data.
