About Me

I am interested in the interactions between rivers and groundwater and how this controls biotic distributions in rivers, floodplains and near-surface ground waters. The underlying perspective is viewing rivers and ground waters, not as distinct systems, but rather as parts of a hydrological continuum. The differential exchange processes that take place between them (i.e. infiltration, exfiltration) are of major significance for habitat diversity, the biodiversity of rivers and their floodplains, for providing organic matter and oxygen for groundwater systems as well as for microbial self-purification processes, and need to be considered in the management and restoration of both surface and subterranean aquatic ecosystems.
