Effects of microplastics on freshwater biofilms - Amplebig

In the Amplebig project we are currently examining the effects of microplastic particles (MP) on the function and structure of autotrophic biofilms upon short-term and long-term exposure. The experiments are carried out in microcosms and indoor experimental stream channels. Assessed responses include growth and activity parameters of bacteria, algae and invertebrates, rates of primary production as well as community composition.  Trophic transfer experiments with snails feeding on biofilms contaminated with MP are carried out to assess for direct effects on the feeding behaviour and reproduction of snails.
