Mitigation Framework

wrq-logo

The idea of the mitigation framework is to provide a set of tools (such as our online modelling tool and interactive manual) for the identification, planning and implementation of mitigation measures to combat geogenic contamination in drinking water. Central to the framework is the integration of expertise from the social and natural sciences.

The framework is divided into two parts that nevertheless complement and interact with each other. The top triangle regards the regional risk assessment of geogenic contamination of drinking water, whereas the bottom triangle offers solutions for the mitigation of the problem on smaller and more local scales.

The top triangle (Regional Assessment) is aimed at the needs of government agencies and international NGOs with trained staff or funds for consultants. They will need to gain regional overviews on the spatial distribution of geogenic contamination in their respective country and subsequently develop large scale strategic approaches for the mitigation of threats.

The bottom triangle (Mitigation) targets local authorities, NGOs and communities that are interested in solving their specific small-scale problem, e.g. a contaminated water supply in their town or village. Here the level of required detail is more crucial and guidance for cost-effective and socially acceptable mitigation measures is necessary.
