Main Research Themes

Business Innovation for Sustainable Infrastructure Services
The current research theme on business innovation for sustainable infrastructure services concentrates on market-based approaches for water, sanitation, waste and energy services in low-income countries. Co-operations exist with private firms, public organizations, and social entrepreneurs. The basic idea is to support water, sanitation, waste and energy service providers to reach a larger commercial and social scale. We are interested in the business model innovations, which make the scaling-up process financially sustainable. We focus on following research questions.

Research questions
Water
What types of business models do exist for water services? How to innovate the business model for water services to move successfully from a pilot to a larger scale?

Sanitation
What type of business models do exist for sanitation services?
How to innovate the business model for sanitation services to move successfully from pilot to a larger scale?

More information can be obtained from the website of the research group.

Service business development in manufacturing firms
The research theme on services in manufacturing companies aims at questions related to the strategic shift from product-oriented company towards solution providers. We have developed management approaches, which support manufacturing companies to develop a service business and to combine product and services into customer-specific solutions. Heiko has more than a decade of experience in this field and gets invited to key note presentations at conferences and management meetings. He covers topics such as service controlling, commercialization, innovation, organization, service strategies, international service management, and service business in China.
