2009 EPP fellow at Sandec, Doulaye Koné
Jean Birane Gning
September - December, 2009
PhD student, Economics, University of Dakar,
Senegal
During my stay at Eawag, I have been able to achieve the following:
- I have reframed my research through the additional documentation, which are not available in my university.
- I have written my research proposal. This part was the most important because it is the quality of proposal and especially the methodology, which will determine the quality of outcomes.
- I have been able to develop the main tools, which I need for this study:
- SWPO workshops and Focus group
- Survey of garbage collectors, scavengers and private operators
- Interviews with stakeholders and resource persons
- Household survey
Furthermore, I have also completed a short report on the socio-economic evaluation of electronic waste management in Senegal. In addition, I was able to substantially improve my English through the language course and practice.
Eawag has provided me with excellent working conditions.
2009 EPP fellow at Sandec on Excreta and Wastewater Management, Doulaye Koné
Elhadji Mamdou Sonko
January - May, 2009
PhD student, University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar, Senegal
During my fellowship between January to May 2009, I was able to work on my PhD research proposal entitled “Humification performance and Helminth Eggs Inactivation in Faecal Sludge Dewatering Beds”.
My stay at Eawag allowed me to work on my full PhD proposal and research protocol regarding the humification and inactivation of helminth eggs in planted drying beds. I researched the essential process factors including the temperature, pH and humidity levels, climatic factors, excreta quality and plant aeration. I will go back to the Cheikh A. Diop University in Dakar with a fully polished PhD research proposal and will be able to start my field tests soon. Thanks to the inspiring working environment I found at Eawag-Sandec and the support from my mentor Doulaye Koné, I was able to accomplish this in very little time. I cherish the EPP fellowship program and would like to suggest an expansion of this program to allow the fellows to stay up to 6 months at Eawag.
