Eawag’s contribution to «150 years ETH Zurich»
April 19th, 2005
As part of the celebrations marking «150 years ETH Zurich»
the «Worlds of Knowledge» exhibition is being held in the Platzspitz Park
near the Swiss National Museum
in Zurich
from 21 April to 8 May
2005. Researchers from various ETH institutes –
including Eawag – are presenting their work under canvas.
In the «Genius loci» pavilion, water from various sources is on display – from
the Limmat and Sihl rivers and from the groundwater circulating below the Platzspitz Park.
What types of microorganisms live in the groundwater? What species of fish are
found in the Limmat and Sihl? How does the quality of the various samples
differ, and what treatment is required to produce drinking water? The Eawag
scientists responsible for the content of the exhibition in the “Genius loci» pavilion
were Urs von Gunten, Frederik Hammes, Edi Hoehn, Rolf Kipfer, Olivier Leupin,
Andreas Peter, Armin Peter and Wouter Pronk.
Part of the «Earth, Fire, Water and Air» exhibition is concerned with the black
spots on the sun that indicate solar activity. The Institute
of Astronomy shows
visitors how sunspots are counted today. But what about solar activity in the
past? Information on this topic was discovered by Jürg Beer’s group in – of all
places – polar ice cores.
This exhibition is well worth a visit!
