Contributions of Swiss aquatic research to the Millennium Development Goals
February 28th, 2006
Eawag is making active efforts to realize the much-vaunted UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). At a media conference held in Bern today, new results were presented for a number of projects that are increasing access to safe drinking water and helping to improve the disposal of sewage and municipal waste. One of Eawag’s initiatives – the solar water disinfection (SODIS) project – received the special prize for innovation at last year’s Energy Globe Awards. Thomas Zeller, representing the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and National Councillor Rosmarie Zapfl underlined the important role played by research – and Switzerland as a research centre – on the path towards the MDGs. The President of the ETH Board, Alexander Zehnder, pointed out that high-quality research is also required for solutions adapted to the conditions prevailing in developing and emerging nations.
