also major economic services. Examples of the latter are drinking water
supplies, use for energy provision and tourism. These economic services can only
be provided, however, if the aquatic ecosystems are intact and can withstand the
pressures of outside interference. Ensuring that these conditions are met means
knowing how aquatic ecosystems function and incorporating this knowledge in the
planning process.
