"Fingerprinting" of microbial communities has become one of the central tools applied in molecular microbial ecology. Researchers have the choice of a large variety of methods, each with specific advantages and disadvantages. Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) is currently one of the most widely used methods. The talk will present examples for the use of DGGE from my own research, showing applications in various environments and for different types of research questions. The advantages and disadvantages of DGGE and some of the alternatives will be discussed.
