The rapid development of Microbial Fuel Cells in the last ten years has opened up a new field in science and technology development – bio-electrochemical processes. While the fundamental aspects are fascinating in their own right, the range of applications of this new platform technology is growing constantly. The initial focus on power production from wastewater has been expanded to include selective removal of pollutants such as nitrate, sulfide or specific pharmaceuticals and even novel chemical production processes. This presentation will discuss some of these emerging processes and potential application concepts. Additionally, Jurg Keller will touch on the challenges for Australia's water resource management, particularly in view of the droughts and recent floods in South East Queensland.
