New approaches to elucidate toxic effects in a fish model
species, the fathead minnow Ecotoxicology is concerned with understanding how animals are impacted by
pollutants in the ecosystem. Recent developments in this area empowered by the
widespread availability of functional genomics technologies such as high
throughput sequencing, expression profiling, proteomics and metabolomics, have
been successful in increasing our understanding of specific mechanism of action
and have provided very useful biomarkers for environmental risk assessment.
However, the full potential of predictive toxicology can only be achieved by
taking a Systems level approach, which integrates these complex multi-level
molecular and physiological measurements within a unifying interpretative
model. This talk will present a systems biology approach to try to elucidate
adverse outcome pathways using the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) as a
model species.
