The SWW Seminar will present the results of the brand new
report ‘Abwasserentsorgung 2025’ for BAFU. The report is structured in seven
sub-reports that present the state of knowledge on Wastewater Management in
Switzerland. Knowledge gaps and need for action are identified and evaluated in
an additional report. An overview of legislation and organization of the Swiss
wastewater sector is presented in the report “Policy and Governance”. It
indicates that management of urban wastewater infrastructure can be optimized
regarding the size and form of organizations. The report “Economic Relevance”
shows the value of the Swiss urban
wastewater infrastructure. An increase of overall costs in the future is
expected but will not necessarily have an effect on wastewater fees.
The
report “Wastewater Infrastructure” asks for an improvement in data availability
of sewer infrastructure data. Although the wastewater infrastructure is already
built, some trends could have a substantial
impact on this infrastructure. Changes in “Wastewater–quantity and quality”
might occur due to climate change, population increase and use of new
technologies. The “Influence of wastewater on waterbodies” is most relevant in
small streams. Micropollutants are a future challenge for wastewater
management. Means for future action in “Urban Hydrology” are the availability
of modern rain data with high disaggregation and a systematic approach to
handle uncertainty in sewer modeling. “New technologies” in urban wastewater
management have emerged in the field of sewer deterioration analysis, in
control engineering, membrane technologies, autotrophic nitrogen removal and
new sanitation concepts.
