Population dynamics is a field of study with a long history dating back to people such as Fibonacci, Malthus and others. While traditional population modeling focuses on deterministic differential equations (such as the seminal equations by Lotka and Volterra), recent research especially in the physics community has focused on a stochastic approach. Here, simple stochastic lattice models provide means to study both population dynamics (for the biologist) and non-equilibrium phase transitions (for the theoretical physicist). I will review the most important concepts in this field and discuss some simple models I have introduced for investigating reproduction, competition and predation processes.
