Rapid Sand Filtration (RSF) can suffice as the sole treatment step for drinking water production when high quality groundwater is available as source water.
Notwithstanding its long history of practical success, there have been limited detailed scientific enquiries in the actual processes occurring in RSFs. Using a multiphasic approach, we are engaged in an effort at identifying and quantifying the microbiological processes and communities that are relevant to the core functions of RSFs.
