Environmental transformation of organic compounds:                  Towards a joint perspective on the importance of transformation products as environmental contaminants – TransCon2010

Centro Stefano Franscini, Monte Verità, Ascona, Switzerland
September 12 - 17, 2010
Successful TransCon2010 - For a short summary of the conference and some pictures see here [pdf]
Conference theme and aims

TransCon2010 will address transformation of organic contaminants in the environment with a focus on the possible formation of stable, environmentally relevant transformation products. Experimental and model-based scientific methods to investigate and predict transformation processes, and to assess the environmental fate and toxicity of transformation products will be discussed.

The conference’s aim is to develop a common understanding of how much transformation products contribute to the overall chemical risk in the environment. It will bring together scientists from different disciplines (chemistry, (eco-)toxicology, microbiology, engineering) with people from environmental agencies, water suppliers and industry to develop a common understanding of how to deal with transformation products in chemical risk assessment and environmental monitoring.

Researchers and experts from industry and regulatory authorities intested in the topic of the conference are invited to submit abstracts for a poster or platform presentation and to register for the conference.

Conference venue

The conference will take place at the Centro Stefano Franscini, the congress center of ETH Zurich located on Monte Verità, the “Hill of Truth” rising above the lake town of Ascona, in southern Switzerland. Accommodation and all lunches and dinners will be at this truly beautiful conference site. A trip to the surrounding area and a conference dinner are planned.

Conference organizers

The conference is organized by Prof. Juliane Hollender (Eawag), Dr. Kathrin Fenner (Eawag) and Prof. John Sumpter (Brunel University). They are well-known experts in the fields of environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology, and have worked intensively on the issue of aquatic contaminants and specifically transformation product assessment.
