Mission

The Department of APplied Aquatic ECology (APEC) is committed to contribute to the resolution of current and future water resources and management conflicts and to contribute to the "wise use" and sustainable management of natural waters. Key objects are the conservation and revitalization of natural functionality of surface waters, the ecological use of water resources (such as hydropower) and the sustainable transformation of utility sectors such as water and energy supply. To reach this goal, we develop tools and products in order to analyze conflicting interests and different management options and use the pathways of research, consulting and teaching. We make use of our own three competencies and complement the other fields of sciences by collaboration with other departments, research institutes, Governmental agencies and private companies. For details of our plans see Strategie und Planung APEC. Currently we concentrate on three subjects:

    · Green hydropower project (Oekostrom)
    · Management of dams, lakes and reservoirs
    · Revitalization of the Rivers Rhone and Thur

    Our three competencies are:

    · Aquatic Physics
    · Fish Ecology
    · Innovation Research in the Utility Sector (CIRUS)
