The Limnological Research Center Kastanienbaum forms part of EAWAG in Duebendorf. The multidisciplinary Institute for Environmental Sciences conducts field-oriented research. Its closeness to Lake Lucerne and the available research boats facilitate work at or in the water. Our staff of 80 specialists come from various departments of EAWAG, such as biogeochemistry (including aquatic chemistry, geochemistry, molecular ecology, limnology, and analytical chemistry), fisheries, limnology, environmental physics (including sedimentology). Our main fields of research focus on the ecology of lakes and rivers and include:

  • Diagenetic processes in sediments and nutrient cycles.
  • In situ analysis of environmentally relevant microorganisms and their processes.
  • Development of in situ measurement techniques and sampling methods.
  • Sediments as archives of the past.
  • Mixing processes in lakes.
  • Artificial aeration of eutrophic lakes.
  • Environment and occurrence of native fish species.
  • Primary production and photosynthesis.
  • Degradation of plant debris in streams.
  • Groundwater as natural habitat.
  • Consequences of farming practices in the lake catchment.
