About Me

Group leader of the group Restoration ecology

Academic & research interests
My main interests are fish habitats, use of habitat by fishes, fish migration, radio telemetry and population dynamics. In addition I am highly interested on the impacts of hydropower use on fishes. Our group (applied fish ecology group) has a strong focus on applied research projects.
Since years I am involved in stream and river assessment using morphological or biologcial methods. In the year 2000 we started the “Rhone-Thur” project. This transdisciplinary project focused on river restoration and helps river managers to improve the alarming state of rivers and streams.
I am a lecturer at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) teaching fish ecology and management of aquatic systems.

Fish habitat and fish migration
Swiss streams and rivers are highly degraded and due to the high degree of river fragmentation (artificial barriers) the migration of fishes is very much limited. However, many fish species depend on the longitudinal connectivity of streams and rivers. With our research projects we identify the habitat conditions, habitat use and migrations of different fish species.
In addition we develop tools for the assessment of streams and rivers and long-term monitoring concepts for salmonid streams in Switzerland.
River restoration
In order to fulfil their function as fish habitat, streams require not only good water quality, but also near-natural morphology, a high degree of structure and connected habitats. In Switzerland there is a big need for actions in order to achieve near-natural streams and rivers. In the “Rhone-Thur” project basic principles of river restoration were analyzed and appropriate measures developed. River restoration is a cooperation between science, practice and the public.
