BJ Ward is a PhD researcher and ETH E4D Fellow under the supervision of Dr. Linda Strande and Prof. Eberhard Morgenroth. Her PhD project focuses on optimizing settling and dewatering of faecal sludge to increase treatment capacity and access to sanitation in low-income cities.
BJ's research aims to develop a fundamental understanding of the physico-chemical mechanisms governing solid-liquid separation in faecal sludge. Once governing mechanisms are identified, rapid or online measurements for practical use can be linked to fundamental behaviour. The hopeful outcome of this research will be a model based on rapid influent sludge characterization to predict conditioner dose in real-time. BJ will work in collaboration with partners throughout Asia and Africa to validate the model and trial with drying beds, settling-thickening tanks, and low-footprint dewatering technologies.
This PhD project is supported by the Sawaris Foundation for Social Development and ETH Global, and by SNSF.
