About Me

My work largely sits at the interface between process engineering and microbiology. The most-efficient solutions to engineering problems often involve asking the right community of bacteria to solve the problems for us. In the water wall treatment module in the Blue Diversion Autarky Toilet, we are at one moment optimizing conditions for a biofilm to remove organics and nitrogen, the next moment we are doing everything we can to prevent the growth of any bacteria that could be harmful in the membrane permeate. While I have mixed feelings with respect to supporting or opposing the growth of bacteria or biofilms in a given process, I am very happy to be exploring such processes at Eawag.

Projects

We develop reactors for the separate treatment of urine, feces and water directly in the toilet.
