Geochemical modelling of lake sediments

Sediments are important sources and sinks of substances in lakes. We perform geochemical modelling of lake sediments with the aims to

  • assess the contributions of sediments to lake-internal mass balances
  • better understand the processes that drive biogeochemical processes in lake sediments
  • contribute to the understanding of sediment archives of past climate changes and anthropogenic activities.

We use Medialab, a further development of MatSedlab to perform the simulations.
Recently, the model was applied to simulate the effects of different scenarios for nutrient loads and artificial aeration on Lake Baldegg in the project “Mineralization of organic matter in the sediments of nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor lakes”.
