Fish cell line–based ecotoxicology methods have advanced significantly in recent years and offer promising alternatives to in vivo testing. While they have the potential to reduce animal use in toxicology, their uptake remains limited, often due to regulatory challenges.

At this two-day workshop, participants identified key barriers and opportunities for broader adoption of these assays. Discussions also explored the concept of an integrated fish invitrome framework, currently under development by the Utox team, which could help accelerate their implementation.

The workshop brought together diverse perspectives from across the field and encouraged a shift from mutual finger-pointing toward identifying both individual and shared responsibilities. This helped define concrete next steps for advancing new assessment approaches such as fish cell line assays.
