Climate extremes like heat waves and prolonged periods of drought have become more frequent and severe across the biosphere. Ecological responses to these events are still less known. In particular, we know little about how ecological resistance and ecological recovery after climate extremes are related. Using soil microorganisms and soil invertebrates, we experimentally test their ecological resistance and recovery after climate extremes, and in doing so, generate predictions for how resistance and recovery are related, and how they enable our understanding of ecological stability in a rapidly changing world.
