Making urban heatwaves more bearable

Plants and water can mitigate the heat in cities. Using Zurich as a case study, Eawag researchers tested a climate model, which indicates how big the effect of green and blue spaces is. The model supports urban planning and shows where improvements would be particularly effective. Read more

Nuclear waste storage needs to withstand an ice age

A nuclear waste storage facility needs to be secure, even if glaciers  were to churn down from the Alps into the midlands in a distant future. This is why Nagra arranged for a study of the sediments that had been deposited in former, deep glacial lakes. Read more

Natural pesticide for the production of protein-rich microalgae

In times of climate crisis and food shortages, the cultivation of microalgae is a promising solution that could fundamentally change the way we produce animal feed, bioplastics or biofuel. A new Eawag study shows how the cultures can be protected against pests. Read more

Land use influences organisms living underground

Researchers at Eawag were able to show that land use within a radius of up to one kilometre from the water extraction site has an impact on the amphipods in groundwater. This could indicate that the current groundwater protection zones are not large enough. Read more

Translating science into action and engage in biodiversity policy-making
In view of biodiversity loss, it is important that early-career researchers get involved not only in science but also contribute to biodiversity policy. The Blue-Green Biodiversity research initiative of Eawag and WSL organised a workshop to facilitate cooperation between science, practice and politics. To the news article and the video

Cover picture: Technicians Andreas Taverna and Danina Schmidt from the Eawag Fish Ecology and Evolution research department in Kastanienbaum take water samples in Lake Lucerne from the Eawag research vessel "Perca". To do this, they slowly lower a Schroeder flask to 20 metres and quickly raise it again. A defined amount of water collects in the bottle per metre of water depth. These composite samples can be used to collect important data on algae composition, for example, and thus analyse the productivity of the lake. (Photo : Alessandro della Bella)
