Spatial Dynamics - Florian Altermatt
Welcome

Welcome

We are part of the Institute of Integrative Biology (IBZ) and the Department of Environmental Sciences (D-UWIS) at ETH Zürich. Our group is hosted by Eawag in Dübendorf, where our offices and labs are based.

The research of our group focuses primarily on how organisms spread in space, and how the arrival of new species affects local communities. We apply such spatial dynamics to invasive species, as well as general metacommunities. In particular, we are interested how different spatial layouts, such as linear versus dendritic landscapes, and dispersal directionality affect invasion success. To address these questions, we conduct experiments in the laboratory with protozoa-microcosms and integrate the results into mathematical models. We also conduct experiments and comparative studies with Amphipods and other freshwater invertebrates in river systems. Ultimately, we want to improve predictions about invasion dynamics.
