We present a new version of a barcoding reference library dedicated to diatoms, Diat.barcode v12, with newly published sequences, annotated with ecological, and biological traits (size class, life forms, ecological guilds, etc) and curated by a college of experts. Diat.barcode incorporates rbcL data on all diatoms, though freshwater taxa are better represented. We used this library in two different areas, one where the taxonomic coverage of the library was good (mainland France) and another where it was poor (French Guyana) with about 320 diatom samples collected for river monitoring across both regions. We show that a direct bioinformatic assignment of environmental sequences to traits (ecological guilds, habitats, morphology) has great potential in French Guyana where species knowledge is poor and therefore the proportion of assigned environmental sequences is much lower (12.8%) than trait assignation (30%). We used co-correspondence analyses to show that, unlike mainland France where all species and trait assignation datasets were significantly correlated, in French Guyana only 7 out of 13 trait categories showed a significant correlation. This indicates a significant loss of ecological information through species assignment in French Guyana. Consequently, directly assigning environmental sequences to traits can be useful and provide more ecological information in regions with poor taxonomic knowledge because of the many rbcL sequences without taxonomic assignations.

The family Kogiidae, comprising the pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) and the dwarf sperm whale (K. sima), represents some of the least-known cetaceans worldwide. Their small size, deep-diving behaviour, and elusive surface activity result in very few live sightings, particularly in the North Atlantic Ocean. Here, we report two significant observations from the Azores in July 2025: a group of six K. breviceps, the largest reported group size of this species, and a confirmed sighting of K. sima off Pico Island – representing only the sixth record for the archipelago. Photographic evidence and expert validation confirmed the identification of K. sima based on body proportions. We also review records of both species, including other live encounters and strandings, across the Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde). Together, our observations and synthesis document an exceptional group size for K. breviceps, emphasise the rarity of K. sima in the region, and highlight the value of whale-watching platforms and citizen science for monitoring elusive cetaceans.

In the Ophioderma longicaudum species complex, previous studies identified five biological species: three broadcast spawners, including O. longicaudum s.s., and two brooders. This study explores the phylogeography of the complex, incorporating novel samples from its Western range: Algeria and the French Atlantic coast. We analysed 66 new COI and 65 new EF1 sequences alongside 869 published COI and 116 EF1 sequences. Based on these markers, all new specimens belonged to O. longicaudum s.s. This species displayed limited genetic differentiation among localities and a nearly significant isolation-by-distance pattern, although the most abundant haplotypes spanned from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Atlantic. This weak genetic structure, unusual for a species with lecithotrophic larvae, likely reflects large effective population sizes. A survey of gonad developmental stages showed that most Algerian individuals spawned between July and August but some showed reproductive activity in March—a period unreported for broadcast spawners—suggesting possible brooding in Algeria. However, additional unlinked genetic markers are needed to include the Algerian and Atlantic genotypes in a global multilocus biogeographical dataset in order to delimit species. As new populations of this abundant species are discovered, this study, with its updated genetic database, will be invaluable for integrative taxonomy.
