Welcome
The
Department Environmental Microbiology is investigating microbial life and
activities in the aquatic environment (surface and groundwater), in drinking
water and its resources, and in technical systems such as the treatment of sewage
or drinking water production facilities. Using a cellular and (eco)
system-orientated research approach and a combination of biological and
chemical expertise, we want to
- quantify activities of aquatic micro-organisms and estimate their effect on the water quality of water resources, drinking water and sewage,
- expand the understanding of the role of micro-organisms in different aquatic, technical and natural systems,
- develop tools and systems that allow to include microbial activities and their effects in the evaluation of water quantity and quality, and to apply this knowledge for research, environmental management and technical control of environmental systems.
