Collaborative partnership in faecal sludge management, Burkina-Faso
A joint project between ONEA
and Sandec, aiming at developing an adapted faecal sludge management
scheme, and strengthening its staff capacity for the operation of wastewater
and faecal sludge treatment infrastructure.
Context:
In West Africa, the majority of the urban
population with access to sanitation rely on onsite sanitation facilities. Unsewered
systems can provide adequate access to sanitation, and treatment can be
coupled with WW systems in urban areas.. To address the challenge of asignificant population growth rate and
ensurepublic health, ONEA has adopted Strategic Plans for the
two largest cities in Burkina Faso for their wastewater and faecal sludge management.
ONEA first built sewers and treatmentplants, and has now launched a program to
expand the existing infrastructure to include faecal sludge management.
Objectives:
The goal of this project is to assist in
the implementation of faecal sludge treatment plants, and the successful operation and maintenance of wastewater
treatment plants. A strong capacity strengthening component targets increasing the skills of
local stakeholders in sanitation, and in diffusing the research results.
