Partnership for Urban Resource Recovery (PURR)

Sandec is launching a new research project to evaluate options for the cotreatment and resource recovery of biosolids from wastewater and faecal sludge treatment in five cities in Vietnam.

Context:

One quarter of Vietnam's population lives in cities, and the urban population is expected to keep increasing by at least 1 million people annually. Currently, there is no faecal sludge management for onsite systems, and wastewater sewers and treatment plants are not sufficiently distributed to provide environmental protection and sanitation coverage in urban areas. Even if a goal of 80–90% of households being connected to the sewer by 2020 is met, septic tanks will continue to play an important role for the remaining 10–20%. A recent survey in Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Ho Chi Minh City revealed that septic tanks are still the most widely distributed type of household sanitation system in peri-urban and urban areas. The faecal sludge from septic tanks needs to be collected, transported and treated in a safe and adequate fashion in order to provide protection of human and environmental health.

Objectives:

This project aim to:

  1. Develop a basic understanding of faecal sludge characteristics, and the potential for anaerobic digestion
  2. Evaluate co-digestion of faecal sludge and wastewater sludge
  3. Evaluate the market demand for resource recovery from biosolids from faecal sludge and wastewater treatment
