Strategic Environmental Sanitation Planning

Sandec’s research on Strategic Environmental Sanitation Planning aims to systematically address the complexity of urban sanitation problems and to develop appropriate solutions to these problems. Our research combines aspects of engineering (appropriate technology – cf. Compendium of Sanitation Systems and Technologies) with methods and approaches of planning and social sciences in order to tackle the under-provision of basic urban services in the global South.

Research projects:

Diversion for safe sanitation - The proposal by Eawag and EOOS in the framework of the “Reinvent the Toilet Challenge” initiated by the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation

Community-Led Urban Environmental Sanitation (CLUES) - Developing and validating people-centered planning approaches

Egyptian-Swiss Research on Innovations in Sustainable Sanitation (ESRISS) - Applied research and validation of appropriate, cost-effective sanitation systems in low- and middle-income countries

Comparing the Costs of On-Site Sanitation Infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia - Identifying the factors determining the capital costs of a variety of widespread on-site sanitation options

Material Flow Analysis for Environmental Sanitation Planning (MFA) - Sandec is applying the MFA method to support the planning of environmental sanitation concepts that promote the saving and reuse of limited resources and preserve the environment
