About 50'000 large dams exist worldwide - built for water supply and irrigation, hydropower production or flood control. Besides these intended effects, dams often significantly influence sediment transport and biogeochemical cycles in downstream rivers and lakes, e.g., by changing the discharge dynamics and retaining sediments and nutrients. Furthermore, they have an impact on greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere by emitting methane to the atmosphere and sequestering organic carbon in the sediments.
