Research cooperation at Lake Kivu
The main findings of the most recent research partnership project “Lake Kivu: Learning from the past for managing its future”, were presented in two workshops in Kigali and Bukavu. Researchers from the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (Rwanda), the Institut Supérieur Pédagogique of Bukavu (DR Congo) and Eawag had jointly investigated this fascinating lake during the past three years. Equipment

  • Stable isotope mass spectrometers (Isoprime) equipped with a gas bench/trace gas/CHN analyser/gas chromatograph for the determination of C/H/N isotopes on solids (sediments/carbonates/bacteria/plankton/terrestrial plants), single organic compounds like lipids and amino acids, and gases

  • Gas chromatograph / Mass spectrometer for the identification of organic molecules

  • Gas chromatographs (FID) for the determination of lipids, amino sugars, amino acids

  • Gas chromatograph (FID, ECD, methanizer) for methane, carbon dioxide, and N2O

  • Gas chromatograph (FID) with fraction collector for the collection of lipids after separation on a GC column (mainly for 14C determination on single lipid compounds)

  • High pressure liquid chromatographs (UV, Fluorescence, Diode array) for pigment and amino acid concentrations including fraction collector

  • High pressure liquid chromatograph (electrochemical detector) for amino sugar concentrations

  • Fluorescence spectrophotometer for the measurements of pigment concentrations

  • CHN elemental analyser for carbon and nitrogen concentrations of solid samples

  • TOC / TON analyser for liquid samples

  • Microwaves for the extraction of organic material

  • Two in situ-pumps (McLane) for filtering large amounts of water in situ down to 6000 m for collection of adequate amounts of organic material for organic geochemistry, isotope analysis, and molecular ecology

  • Two freeze dryers for sample preparation
