Anaerobic methane oxidation in freshwater systems

This project will describe the microbial populations involved in anaerobic methane oxidation in two contrasting freshwater lakes, an environment where information on these organisms is currently almost entirely lacking. The genetic diversity of involved microbes will be characterized, populations will be quantified and related to the biochemical environment and determined rates of methane oxidation, and the distribution and activity of functional genes in the oxidation processes will be used to create direct links between population structure and activity.
