Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in freshwater systems - Lake Rotsee, Lago Cadagno

Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in sediments and water column is known for over thirty years, however, the organisms responsible for this process have been recovered only recently. Additionally most of the investigations focus on marine systems. We investigate the process of anaerobic methane oxidation in the water column of lake systems like Lake Rotsee (Lucerne), Lake Tanganyika, and Lago di Cadagno (Tessin). Beside a detailed chemical characterization of the water column we focus on the bacterial communities responsible for aerobic as well as anaerobic methane oxidation.
