Scenarios for the environmental risk assessment of veterinary medicines in Europe
Background
The registration of veterinary medicines in the European Union requires
assessing the potential surface water contamination by a substance on a
European scale. Veterinary medicines are spread to land in manure or excreted
during grazing and may enter surface waters through runoff, erosion or
leaching. Since the factors driving these processes vary largely within Europe,
it is necessary to identify characteristic conditions, so-called scenarios,
under which veterinary medicines enter surface waters. These scenarios are used
in higher tiers of the environmental risk assessment.
