Chemistry of Water Resources

We study basic biogeochemical processes that influence the quality of water resources, with a focus on inorganic contaminants.

While our main interest is groundwater, we include the adjacent river, lake and soil systems and we are involved in the national river monitoring and survey programme (NADUF).

In connection with increasing water contaminant problems in developing countries, we work on the development of adapted water treatment procedures for the removal of contaminants, in cooperation with the drinking water group and EAWAG's SANDEC department.

Sampling in Bangladesh

We take the approach of studying key processes in water resources in detail with model systems in the laboratory. The aim is to obtain a general molecular level understanding of the most important reactions that can be applied to more complicated environmental systems and to the development of remediation strategies and water treatment options.

Projects

  • Mitigation of Groundwater-derived Arsenic Hazards and Sustainable Water Supply System in Asian Countries (AGS)
  • Reduction and oxidation of chromium
  • Solar oxidation and removal of arsenic from drinking water (SORAS): Overview and details
  • In situ FTIR-spectroscopy and microscopy of processes on mineral surfaces
  • Analysis of NADUF Data
  • Significance of river infiltration on ground water quality
  • Advisory work in Federal Committees (NADUF and NAQUA)
