Habitat mapping

Before fishing, the type and quality of the littoral zone and shoreline are recorded, e.g. whether dead wood, reeds or gravelly ground are available and the extent to which the banks are anthropogenically influenced.

With nets, electro-fishing, and traps different types of littoral habitats are sampled selectively. This way, as compared to random fishing, rare species or communities which are dependent on particular habitats are more easily recognized.
