River rehabilitation of running water
In Switzerland, around 90-95 % of streams and rivers are
currently canalised or suffer from other types of habitat impairment (lack of
riparian vegetation, river bed structures and connectivity, etc.). Therefore a
huge potential for rehabilitation exists. This research focus has particularly
been addressed in the Rhone-Thur project (www.rhone-thur.eawag.ch and
www.rivermanagement.ch).
The follow-up project of the
Rhone-Thur project “Integral management of river catchments" started. There are 2
focus subjects:
- Technical interventions and habitat diversity
- Longitudinal and lateral connectivity of rivers
- Contact person: Armin Peter
- Funding: Eawag, VAW, EPFL, WSL, Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN)
