Über mich
Our research aims to identify the key factors that govern the fate and transport of emerging pollutants, their biotransformation products, and dissolved organic matter in porous media and biofilm-based systems. By doing so, we seek to enable sustainable water management solutions, including advanced (waste)water treatment and reuse.
Specifically, we focus on:
- Understanding and leveraging microbial and physicochemical interactions that influence contaminant behavior in both engineered and nature-based porous media systems, such as technical GAC and sand filters as well as bank filtration.
- Characterizing and engineering microbial communities to enhance pollutant biotransformation, combining experimental approaches (e.g., metagenomics, pathway-informed community assembly) with computational tools (e.g., predictive metabolism).
- Designing, implementing, and optimizing hybrid biological–physical treatment processes for wastewater treatment, drinking water purification, water reuse, and remediation guided by mechanistic insights to improve efficiency, resilience, and long-term sustainability.
