The Centre Suisse de Cartographie de la Faune (CSCF – Info Fauna) is the national contact partner for information about the distribution of fauna in Switzerland. On behalf of the BAFU it publishes species lists, for instance the red list or the list of species of national priority, and it maintains a data base about occurrences of species in Switzerland. Research institutions, public authorities, private offices and private persons have the possibility to request data about the distribution of species for its use in their research and other projects.

The CSCF ensures a permanent availability of research data covering a long time period. The data base contains records of various origins, such as assembled literature data, digitized collection data, voluntarily provided observations as well as data from cantonal and national agencies. Before registration, the quality of the data is assessed. Data sovereignty remains in the hands of the data owner. The data of all national data centers and collection holding institutions is aggregated and provided for open access to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The CSCF also manages a data base that permits to evaluate the water quality of rivers using macroinvertebrates (MIDAT). All data from cantonal and national projects is stored in this data base. A similar data base for the evaluation of springs (MIDAT sources) using macroinvertebrates and morphological parameters is in the process of development.

The aim of this presentation is to show the advantages using the services of the CSCF for research projects and to explain the process and importance of providing own data.
