New tools for automated monitoring of plankton diversity

April 7, 2022, 9.00 am - 5.00 pm

PEAK-Advanced Course V53/22
Plankton diversity monitoring is achieved by sampling and microscopy, which require expensive infrastructure, high processing time, and specialised personnel (taxonomists). These limitations have stimulated the development of alternative and automated plankton monitoring tools, among which imaging techniques have shown the highest potential to yield standardised and reproducible data. In this course, we review the state of the art in terms of automated plankton monitoring, present case studies and comparisons with traditional monitoring, and we will visit the Eawag monitoring installation in Greifensee.

Lead: Dr. Francesco Pomati, Silvana Käser, Marta Reyes
