Consultant Capacity Development (ConCaD) for Citywide Inclusive Urban Sanitation

Building capacity of private sector consulting firms and individual consultants in citywide inclusive urban sanitation.

Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the ConCaD initiative has established a network of collaborating Partner Training Institutes. Together, Sandec and the Institutes have produced open source training materials and a wide array of resources to build the capacities of private sector consulting firms and individual consultants in how to conceptualise, plan, design and supervise the implementation of citywide inclusive urban sanitation (CWIS) services.

CWIS is a paradigm shift in urban sanitation, and emphasizes equity, public and environmental health and the coexistence of hybrid sanitation systems in its approach to urban sanitation. It is based on comprehensive planning, incremental implementation and sustainable operation and monitoring. CWIS promotes the idea that all members of the city can have equitable access to adequate and affordable improved sanitation services through appropriate systems of all scales (sewered & non-sewered), without any contamination to the environment along the entire sanitation value chain.

Increasing consultant capacity in CWIS is essential for the delivery and sustainability of sanitation services to poor and non-poor communities. This also augments the impact of CWIS investments at city scale in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, especially of 'at scale' CWIS services funded by governments and or through international financing institutions and development partners.

The ConCaD initiative has produced the following resources:

  • Interactive digital training materials and curriculum for a three-week small private online course (20-24 hours workload) on CWIS for private consultants with a particular focus on bidding for CWIS projects. The materials have already been used for several online trainings in 2020 and 2021.
  • Interactive training materials and curriculum for a three-day face-to-face training on CWIS for private consultants with a particular focus on bidding for CWIS projects. The materials have already been used for several face-to-face trainings in 2019.
  • A YouTube channel with specifically produced videos that introduce essential CWIS components for private consultants and professionals in the sector to support their understanding of CWIS when bidding on CWIS projects.
  • A Platform/Network of collaborating Partner Training Institutes that conduct trainings in Sub-Saharan Africa (francophone & anglophone) and South East Asia.
