Dr. Émile Sylvestre
About Me
Émile Sylvestre has been a postdoctoral researcher at Eawag since 2021, specializing in risk assessment of waterborne pathogens in water systems. He earned his Civil Engineering degree from Polytechnique Montreal in 2014 and pursued graduate work under the guidance of Prof. Sarah Dorner and Prof. Michèle Prévost at the Industrial Chair in Drinking Water at Polytechnique Montreal. In 2020, he completed his Ph.D. thesis, which focused on assessing microbial risks associated with hydrometeorological events for drinking water safety management. As a research associate at Polytechnique Montreal, Émile then worked in collaboration with federal and provincial agencies in Canada to compile and analyze regulatory Legionella monitoring databases to inform the development of regulations for the control of Legionella in cooling towers.
Currently, at Eawag, Émile is involved in the Waterhub at NEST, where he investigates the virus reduction performances of treatment barriers for safe greywater reuse. He is also involved in the LeCo project, where he evaluates how qPCR methods can be applied to monitor Legionella in buildings. Furthermore, Émile works as a consultant for Health Canada and the National Research Council of Canada, where he contributes to the development of risk assessment tools and guidance documents.
