Dr. Emma Chollet Ramampiandra

Postdoctoral Researcher (she/her)

Department Systems Analysis, Integrated Assessment and Modelling

About Me

I am a postdoctoral researcher in ecological modelling in the Integrative Ecological Systems Analysis research group at the Department of Systems Analysis, Integrated Assessment and Modelling (SIAM) at Eawag and in the Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS) at ETH Zürich.

Research interests

Species Distribution Models

My research focuses on methodological questions related to Species Distribution Models (SDMs). Specifically, I investigate the impact of noise in data on the predictive performance, overfitting and interpretability of SDMs of varying complexity, e.g., Generalized Linear Models, Random Forest or Artificial Neural Networks, utilizing both biomonitoring and artificial data. By conducting this research, I gained general skills about data science, data preprocessing, statistical and machine learning modelling, results visualization.

Mechanistic model Streambugs

During my PhD, I gained solid knowledge about mechanistic models for aquatic ecosystems, in particular about the process-based model Streambugs. Streambugs consists of coupled differential equations describing the time evolution and coexistence of particulate organic matter, algae and invertebrate biomass in streams. It takes into account biotic interactions via competition for food and predator-prey interactions. The model uses allometric scaling based on metabolic theory, ecological stoichiometry and integrates ecological preferences to direct and indirect environmental inputs.

Community assembly of freshwater macroinvertebrates

The application cases of my PhD mainly focused on the community assembly of freshwater macroinvertebrates in Swiss streams. I therefore learned many important ecological processes like food web interactions (predator-prey dynamics, competition for food), dispersal limitation, habitat suitability limitations.
