About Me

I am a biologist working as a technical specialist in the Department of Aquatic Ecology at Eawag. I work within the joint professorship of Jukka Jokela (ETH/Eawag), which studies host-parasite interactions. My main interest lies in genetic questions and their connection to evolutionary processes.

I focus on the further development and optimization of molecular methods for working with non-model organisms. This includes, among other tasks, DNA and RNA extraction and the preparation of libraries for Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) to enable genetic analyses in our projects. In addition, I am responsible for a cleanroom laboratory at the Genetic Diversity Centre (GDC), where I introduce and train researchers as needed. I also work on projects on the population genetics of native, endangered crayfish species to support conservation efforts.

An important part of my work is training in the lab. I train apprentices in the profession of biological laboratory technician and teach MSc and BSc students the practical skills they need for their projects in the molecular biology lab. I place great emphasis on providing a solid introduction to modern molecular methods.
Through my work, I aim to use molecular methods to study genetic diversity in Swiss waters and thus contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. I also want to inspire young people to take an interest in the importance of genetic and evolutionary processes.
