I am a conservation biologist with an academic background in landscape ecology and evolution, enriched with extensive field experience particularly in coral reef systems of the Indian Ocean.
Currently, I am working as a postdoctoral researcher in Landscape connectivity focusing on Biodiversity at the interface of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This project contributes to the 2020-2024 Blue Green Biodiversity Research Initiative, an Eawag and WSL collaboration.
2016-2020, my PhD research focused on the understanding of the ecological and evolutionary determinants of present-day coral reef fish biodiversity. My research axes covered how biodiversity in coral reef fishes was shaped in interaction with different ecological strategies at the macroevolutionary scale, in interplay with long-term geological dynamics, and at the microevolutionary scale in a contemporary seascape (the Western Indian Ocean). Altogether, I recognize this work as being of essential importance for the profound understanding, and thereby the preservation, of the mechanisms that generate and maintain biodiversity in the marine realm. Such improved knowledge is increasingly important in decision-making processes, such as in conservation plans concerning the coping with future global change (e.g. recommendation on size and location of Protected Areas to enhance connectivity) for the maintenance and resilience of biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems services.
Finally, as a scientist in this era of environmental and biodiversity crisis, I strongly value the importance for science to have real-world impact through extensive outreach and stakeholder engagement.
