Shaping the Future of NTS Portals in Europe

February 26, 2026 | Heinz Singer

At a recent workshop bringing together 40 experts, jointly organized by Anna-Lena Kronsbein, Jan Koschorreck from the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt), as well as Teofana Chonova, Heinz Singer and Juliane Hollender from Eawag, the interoperability and future of non-target screening (NTS) portals for high-resolution mass spectrometry data were discussed over the course of two days.

While NTS is a critical tool for exposure assessment, the first NTS portals were developed independently of each other using different metadata standards.

Identified Strategic Objectives:

  • Technical Harmonization: Enhancing interoperability across national NTS platforms.
  • Infrastructure Development: Supporting a robust, coordinated European NTS network.
  • Data Integration: Linking NTS findings to existing national and EU monitoring databases
  • Regulatory Alignment: Bridging the gap between research communities and chemical management decision-makers.

The path forward involves establishing dedicated working groups to develop regulatory use cases and transparent quality control protocols, so that we can transition from isolated data silos to a comprehensive monitoring framework covering the entire water cycle.
