Head of Department

Department Water Resources & Drinking Water

About Me

Research Scientist, Group Leader Molecular Environmental Geochemistry
Head of Department Water Resources & Drinking Water

Research Interests

  • Fate and impact of trace elements (Tl, As, Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, ..) and phosphorus (P) in natural and engineered systems (soils, water resources, aquifers, water treatment)
  • Formation and reactivity of Fe phases and effects on contaminant and nutrient dynamics
  • Influence of variable redox conditions on trace element behavior
  • Element speciation by synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopies

Current Research Projects

  • T-Dyn: Trace element dynamics in periodically waterlogged soils.
  • T-Rox: Trace element release from excavated rocks.
  • P-TRAP: Reduction of diffuse phosphorus inputs into surface waters using iron solids.

Teaching

  • Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements (MSc level, ETH Zurich, 701-1315-00L)
  • Practical Course Biogeochemistry - Part Soil Chemistry (BSc level, ETH Zurich, 701-0420-01L)

    Projects

This project explores how periodic waterlogging may promote the seasonal release of trace elements from soils into water resources under changing climatic conditions.
Wir untersuchen die Auslaugung von Spurenelementen aus dem Aushubgestein & die Risiken für die Wasserressourcen im Zusammenhang mit der Wiederverwendung von Gestein für die Renaturierung.
