About Me

Head of Department: Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development (Sandec)

Research Group Leader: Management of Excreta Wastewater and Sludge (MEWS)

My research is driven by the overarching goal of advancing scientific knowledge to protect human and environmental health through resilient and equitable sanitation solutions. As an engineer and scientist, I bridge the gap between fundamental research (why?) and real-world impact by integrating empirical (what?) and applied (how?) research in real-life settings, ensuring rapid translation of findings into action. To achieve this, I employ a system-based approach, exploring how component knowledge integrates into complete solutions – from understanding microbial processes that affect treatment and greenhouse gas emissions to developing and implementing low-cost, high-accessibility technologies. My inter- and transdisciplinary work encompasses the optimization of treatment technologies, resource recovery, value-chain management, nature-based solutions, and environmental public health surveillance. This comprehensive approach, supported by my background in engineering, science, and mathematics, and extensive international experience, equips me to tackle complex challenges from a global perspective.
